A major ransomware attack broke on Friday, May 12, affecting many organisations the world over, reportedly including major telcos, hospital systems and transportation providers. The attack has purportedly spread to some 150 countries around the world.  The malware responsible for this attack is a ransomware variant known as ‘WannaCry’.

The NHS, Telefonica and FedEx are just some of the myriad of organisations around the world that have had their businesses severely disrupted by the outbreak of WannaCry, but why did it occur and what can be done to mitigate its effects?
